Rockin' Jelly Bean..

It shouldn't be a shock that I'm a big fan of Japanese illustrator Rockin Jelly Bean, especially if you consider my obsession with Jim Phillips, whom which you can pull tons of parallels to RJB (although Jim veers away from sexual content). I mean, it's difficult not to be drawn into his overtly sexy gals pushing out their ridiculously large, gravity affected yet defying chests! Can you find RJB's Jim Phillips nod in the drawing below? (cough- roskopp- cough)
The graphic style brings me back to when I first noticed art in general.. for me it wasn't the classics that first pulled me in, it was cool stuff like this on skateboards and stickers that first got my attention, as lame as that sounds. Enjoy, not sure why I've never posted his stuff before. Here's a great interview with him that I just stumbled upon while writing this.
He's also an interesting guy that has crafted a very mysterious public image. Outside of his possibly surreptitious name, RJB shows up at every appearance wearing a different Mexican wrestling mask, and surrounded by girls that are as smokin' as his drawings.

Cheatin' Production Blog - Episode Thirteen - Guest Episode ft. Hisko Hulsing Pt. 2/3

Cheatin' Production Blog - Episode Thirteen - Guest Episode ft. Hisko Hulsing Pt. 2/3 from Bill Plympton on Vimeo.

In the 2nd installment of the three part Guest Episode, Bill, Signe Baumane, and Hisko Hulsing discuss how essential critique is to the production process (i.e. test screenings and focus groups). The fellow animators passionately address the "gamble" of making art, and Signe even reveals her life's backup plan...

Patrick Smith Skate Decks at the Lyman Allyn Museum..

Two of my painted skate decks are in a group museum show at the Lyman Allyn Museum, New London CT..  Thanks to the ultra legit Wampum Skate shop, an aesthetically fused concept by skater and Montauk local, Lennon Ficalora.  I have mixed feelings about the ongoing fad of artists that are not connected to skate culture designing decks for gallery shows, that's why Wampum resonates with truth.  These decks were done last summer for the opening of the shop in the Hamptons, and were influenced heavily by todd solondz's movie poster for "Happiness" by Daniel Clowes. Try to stop by if you're in the hood!

Can't seem to get away from those lame TV creds.

Raymond Lemstra..

Great stuff from artist Raymond Lemstra, in his own words...

"With my work I like to refer to the illustrative nature of primitive drawings and sculptures. What I find interesting about these is the distortion as a result of selective emphasis; parts of interest are emphasized, unimportant parts reduced or left out. For characters this means they come out big headed, where focus is on the face and the body is trimmed to its essential properties. I deliberately apply this primitive logic as a method. But I don't apply it equally to all aspects of my work. Instead, I choose to use a very mature, highly laboursome technique for the execution of my work. This contrast, between the naive and sophisticated, gives the work a somewhat awkward taste. A clash of intent, simultaniously assuming simplicity and complexity, randomness and reason, flaws and perfection. The purpose of which is to inspire a sense of joy and discovery"  -Raymond Lemstra

Hair and other connective works by Jeannie Phan..

Jeannie Phan makes you reconsider the importance of hair within our images.. she's ignited an interest for me to build upon my "connective" nature of representing people. Nice work.

Philippines illustrator and t-shirt designer Chad Manzo will not disappoint you. It warms my ice cold heart that he exists and does what he does.

TIMBA.. awesome.

You're going to like this everyone..  Timba's drawings are retro-fresh, iconic, un-apologetically and ironically commercial, appealing, sexy as hell, and all around super inspirational.  Dig.
